“The advancement of girl child- a new dimension for the country” keeping this slogan in mind, National Girl Child Day 2019 was observed in Kurigram, Bangladesh on October 1, 2019. CARE’s IMAGINE Project organized a number of events including rally and discussion session to mark the day.
Inspiring Married Adolescent Girls to Imagine New Empowered Futures (IMAGINE) is funded by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation while implemented by Mahideb Jubo Somaj Kallayan Somity (MJSKS) in Belgacha and Punchgachi union of Kurigram. The aim of the project is to delay first birth at least 6 months or more above the average among the married adolescent girls of 15-19 years old in intervention areas by 2021.
Md. Jafor Ali, Zilla Parishad Chairman, Kurigram was present as chief guest in the program.
The discussion session started with a welcome speech from Amal Kumar Majumder, Director, MJSKS Special guests were Dr. Md. Habubur Rahman, Civil Surgeon, Kurigram; Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam, Deputy Director-Family Planning, Kurigram and Md. Ainul Haque, Principal, Technical Training Center, Kurigram. Representatives from the local group namely Archona Rani Roy, Monisha Akhtar and Arifa Akhtar shared struggles and aspirations of the local girls.
“Nowadays, adolescent girls are not staying behind. If they get an opportunity, they exceed expectations even. Our adolescent girls can play a vital role in the socio-economic development of the country”- said Md. Jafor Ali, Zilla Parishad Chairman of Kurigram while delivering his speech. He also suggested scaling up of the IMAGINE project to cover more adolescent girls in the community.
