Shakib requests student back to their studies via facebook

The Bangladesh cricketer praised the movement by the students and congratulated them for being able to make the government accept their demands

Bangladesh Test and T20I captain Shakib Al Hasan took to his verified Facebook page to request the student protesters to head back home. The ace all-rounder who is in Florida, USA now for the last two matches of the T20I series against hosts West Indies spoke about the ongoing student protests against the traffic system in the country on Friday evening.

Shakib said, “I am currently in Florida. At this crucial moment today, I want to say something for my young fans.

“On July 29, two school students – Diya and Abdul Karim – died in a bus crash at the capital’s Airport road and I was really saddened by it. But I felt proud as a Bangladesh citizen after seeing their classmates and fellow students across the country staging protests, demanding safe roads and punishment for the guilty parties. If I was in Bangladesh right now, I would have taken your autographs,” said Shakib is his statement.

The Bangladesh cricketer praised the movement by the students and congratulated them for being able to make the government accept their demands. Shakib later requested the protesting students to head back home and to their academic institutions and assured that he will be beside the students if the demands are not met.

“I want to praise you and say that your demands are being implemented. Besides providing financial assistance to the families of the victims, the Honourable Prime Minister is working towards ensuring road safety laws. The route permit of the accused transport service has been cancelled and five persons related to the incident have been arrested. At this stage, I want to request you humbly, to return to the classrooms and concentrate on studies. Whatever you have done so far will forever be in the history books of this country. The achievement will be successful once you get back to your studies.

“Your demands have been fulfilled and are currently being implemented. You will find me beside you if you go for any alternatives,” said the Bangladesh all-rounder.

The statement however was not taken well by Facebook followers and in return had received a severe backlash.

Shakib is the second cricketer from the current squad to speak on the issue. Earlier pacer Rubel Hossain had showed his solidarity to the affected families of those killed in a road accident.

On Sunday last, Diya Khanam Mim and Abdul Karim Rajib, students of the college section of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin School and College, were killed after a bus ploughed through some students in front of Kurmitola General Hospital on Airport Road in Dhaka. Following the incident the students of different schools, colleges and universities in Dhaka had the capital in halt as they took to the streets to demand capital punishment of the bus driver. The students also proposed a 9-point demand to better the traffic system in the country.
