12 people die in Rangamati & Cox’s Bazar landslides

At least 12 people, were killed in separate incidents of landslide in different areas of Naniarchar upazila in Rangamati and Cox’s Bazar districts early Tuesday amid heavy rains in the district.

In Rangamati, four of the victims were killed in Darmachandpara, while four members of a family in Boro Poolpara and three in Hatimara in the upazila, said Tridip Kanti Das, member of Rangamati Parbotto Zila Parishad.

Besides, vehicular movement on Rangamati-Chittagong highway remained suspended as the road went under water at Thandachari point.

Many low-lying areas of the district were submerged due to the incessant heavy rains over the last two days.

Similar heavy rains will continue over the next two days as well, said the Met office.

Although 120 people died in last year’s landslides, none of them were from Naniarchar. After the incident, the district administration made a list of vulnerable settlers, including 1,111 people of 239 families of four unions of the Upazila.
