Eminent Economist and Director of UNDP Human Development Report Office Dr. Selim Jahan underscored the need for publishing National Human Development Report annually for the interest of inclusive and sustainable development.
He mentioned that Government of Bangladesh started publication of National Human Development Report in 1992 but it was not continued. He was addressing in a discussion session on National Human Development Report: Bangladesh Perspective organized by Economic Relations Division at NEC conference room with the assistance of UNDP supported Knowledge for Development Management (K4DM) Project. Kazi Anowarul Hoque, Additional Secretary of Economic Relations Division presided over the session.
Dr. Selim Jahan mentioned that development efforts need to have a positive impact on life and livelihood of common people and minimizing discrimination should be the key target.
“Publication of National Human Development Report can contribute in overcoming data gap and influence the policy makers in realizing status at macro and micro level” he added.
He also informed that till now 900 human development reports at the national level have been published across the world and in India, some province also publishes a similar report.
He mentioned that increasing growth and per capita income is important but these indicators do not mean the overall human development of a country. People’s participation in decision making and reflection of community need in development planning is equally important.
Dr. Jahan suggested forming an advisory board engaging public and private sector and authors panel comprising experts from the different discipline to develop the national human development report. A representative from different ministries and implementing agencies took part in the discussion.
