Social media in China is abuzz over a bird that resembles Trump

News Hour:

An ear of corn. A troll doll. A caterpillar. Donald Trump’s straw-yellow hair has been compared to many things. China may have just found a new one.

Images of a golden pheasant’s impressive coif flooded Chinese social media this week, after a journalist in the eastern city of Hangzhou noted its striking resemblance to the future U.S. president.

The bird, known as “Little Red,” lives in the Hangzhou Safari Park, and his feathers puff out during the winter months to keep him warm. The pheasant’s owner, Mr. Gao, told the Daily Mail he started noticing the similarity after the election.

The comparison delighted social media users.

“I’m worried this bird will be beaten by other birds,” said one person on Weibo, China’s version of Twitter.

“You should say Trump’s hairstyle resembles this bird!” joked another Weibo user.

The bird’s body has a reddish tinge, leading one viewer to observe that it did a nice job of sticking with the Republican color scheme.

Around 50 pheasants live in the park, but none of the others look quite so vibrant. These birds, native to China’s western mountainous regions, are a protected species in the country.

Experts know little about their behavior in the wild.
