“Haiti – Fuel for Change”, USAID’s film about Haiti’s fuel system

News Hour:

“Fuel for Change” is a short documentary about the traditional method of cooking with charcoal in Haiti and its impact on people’s well-being and Haiti’s fragile forests. Incredibly, nearly all of Haiti’s 10 million people cook with charcoal. The film is written and directed by Robert Ferrier.

97% of Haiti’s forest cover has been cut down to meet this demand. Deforestation, flash-floods, indoor air pollution… Haiti is at a crossroads… can it change course? USAID thinks it can though programs that help Haitians ween themselves off charcoal and use alternative fuels and stoves.

This film highlights how Haitian entrepreneurs are providing alternative, cleaner cooking solutions so that Haitians can take action to lead healthier lives and preserve Haiti’s environment. Together with with the Haitian Government, private entrepreneurs, and civil society, USAID helped grow a local market and a sustainable industry for alternative clean cookstoves, including those that use liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and biomass.
